Summer – When I Grow Up… (WIGU)
Our second endeavor started in August 2009. We created our ‘When Grow Up….’ Event known as (WIGU). We know that heart kids are only limited by their imaginations to what they want to be when they grow up. So we bring the quote on quote “GrownUps” to them. It is not a career fair instead the party theme is ‘When I Grow Up…’ We have had Golf Professionals, Chefs, Olympic Athletes, Doctors, Scientists, Teachers, K9 Officers; the list is endless. WIGU is held the first Saturday in August from 11-2pm. RSVP is required via the website RSVP Form, which opens May 3rd.
February – Heart Kids Rock (HKR)
The idea for what has become a non-profit organization called Angels for Hearts, was to give pediatric heart patients the simple joy of waking up to learn that Santa was able to find them while staying in the hospital and delivered presents! Angels for Hearts has been making pediatric heart patient’s ‘Santa Wishes’ come true since 2007. What makes Angels for Hearts unique, is that we do all fundraising and gift shopping then we deliver the gifts prior to Christmas for Santa to hand out. We work with the Child Life Specialists (who share with us the specific wishes of each child) and support the pediatric cardiac units at: Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Stanford CA, Sutter Children’s Center Sacramento, Sacramento CA and UC Davis Children’s Hospital, in Sacramento CA.
March to June – I ♥ Golf Program
“I ♥ Golf”, is a pediatric cardiac golf program sponsored by Angels For Hearts in affiliation with The Morton Golf Foundation, the Northern California Institute for Golf and Haggin Oaks Golf Comples. Angels For Hearts is a 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Non-Profit Organization Tax ID# 26-3287958.
In 2014, wanting to share their love of golf, Doug Dickson and Allie Furgurson-Moreno both Assistant Golf Professionals from Del Paso Country Club, created what has now become our “I ♥ Golf” program. “I ♥ Golf” is now hosted at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, one of the 19 program locations for The First Tee of Greater Sacramento. Kelli Corlett, Director of Jr. & Disabled Golf at Haggin Oaks along with the Junior Golf Team will be leading our monthly clinics while mentoring our young golfers. Doug and Allie are committed to sharing their love of golf and growing our “I ♥ Golf” program in partnership with The First Tee of Greater Sacramento.
The “I ♥ Golf” program offers pediatric cardiac patients ages 4-18 years old the opportunity to play a sport which is safe for pediatric cardiac patients and is highly recommended by pediatric cardiologists. The program allows these children the opportunity to have professional instructional aide and continue their growth and sense of normalcy with the ability to play a sport.
GROWING THE GAME OF GOLF
Our “I ♥ Golf” program is growing the game of golf, the majority of our participants and parents are experiencing the game of golf for the first time. All Angels for Hearts events and programs are entirely free for the heart kids and their families. Golf is a perfect sport for the entire family to play together; they can enjoy being a family without the focus on being a heart family.
At the end of each season when our program concludes, golf clinic participants are invited to play nine holes to practice their skills in September and October.
Angels for Hearts relies on donations, grants and sponsors to fund all our events and programs. Our “I ♥ Golf” program is made possible by generous private donors, corporations and a yearly grant from The Morton Golf Foundation.
Our Angels for Heart mission is to bring normalcy to the pediatric cardiac patients in the hospital and during their lengthy recovery process. We remind our heart kids that first and foremost they are kids before heart patients. The excitement from these kids, their siblings, their parents, and cardiologists is infectious on the golf course during each clinic. We are excited about the future of our “I ♥ Golf” program; our long term partnership with The First Tee of Greater Sacramento is to grow our program with intent of sharing our love of golf with heart children & their families outside the greater Sacramento Region.
December – Santa’s Secret Wish Lists
Angels for Hearts started with the mission of providing normalcy to heart patient’s age newborn to 18. We accomplish this in a number of ways. Our first endeavor was focused on the Christmas Holidays. Working with Child Life Specialists at the hospitals, Angels for Hearts get the various hospitals’ pediatric heart patients “WishList” for gifts from Santa. Angels for Hearts does all the fundraising and shopping to make sure the heart kids get to experience the pure joy of being a child on Christmas morning waking up to find that Santa did find them even in the hospital. Donations are accepted all year long, but needed by December 15th to purchase the children’s Christmas gifts.
